About Us
Of Paradise
Our journey started in the spring of 2021. My husband, Josh, came home to our newly remodeled 1970’s ranch and told me he found the perfect place for us to buy. Having spent the last 10 years remodeling our home and planning for a modest but comfortable future, I was reluctant to hear his idea. He had stumbled across a 150 year old farm house on 80 acres. We scheduled a showing and after our walk through I immediately told Josh that I didn’t think the house would be right for our family of four, but he had fallen in love with the property. After two months full of prayers asking for direction, we packed up our home with our two teenage boys and moved in. We didn’t know much about farming, we just wanted some peace and quiet. We had found a local organic farmer to grow crops on most of the tillable land, but there were still a few acres to have a garden of some sort. It was suggested we send in a soil sample to the state to see what type of plants would grow well on our property. Once the results were back the idea of growing lavender was born, and Schoemann’s Fields of Paradise—now known as Of Paradise—came to life soon after. I knew I had a green thumb, but tending to more than a few plants was going to be a new adventure. I immediately signed up for a lavender agriculture class through a state university and placed my first order for a half acre of plants. By suggestion of the class, I ordered the highly recommended and reasonably priced microwavable still to experiment with distilling lavender oil. Little did I know that my chemistry classes in high school would be put to use!!!
The first summer we had a successful “fresh picked bouquet” roadside stand and harvest. I had even figured out how to distill essential oil successfully! After that came experimenting with making candles, soaps, body spray, body butter, and shower steamers. I stared learning how to make all the lavender products I was buying for self-use with ingredients from my backyard. My kitchen smelled like heaven! After having friends and family try my “experiments” we decided to embrace my calling and Schoemann’s Fields of Paradise was established.
Every year we order an additional half acre of new kinds of lavender. It’s a glorious 2 day event with extended family to put new plants in the ground. This annual ritual has not only expanded our lavender fields but also brought our family closer together. Each year, as our knowledge and experience grow, so does our product line. Of Paradise now flourishes with over 3000 plants, a testament to our faith-filled journey from uncertainty to a blooming business rooted in passion, belief, and perseverance.
